What is Suomi.fi Messages?

Suomi.fi mobile application

With Suomi.fi Messages, you can receive digital mail from several authorities easily and securely on your mobile phone.

Suomi.fi Messages is a service that lets you read official letters in electronic form, either via the Suomi.fi mobile app or on the website suomi.fi/messages.

You’ll have access to an electronic mailbox in Suomi.fi Messages

Digital communication will become the primary method for official correspondence in 2026. Suomi.fi Messages will be activated for you when you log in to an authority’s online service, such as MyTax (OmaVero).

When you use strong authentication, an electronic mailbox will be created for you in Suomi.fi Messages. From then on, you will receive official mail digitally in Suomi.fi Messages. The change applies to adults who use electronic services.

Please note that if you are conducting business in an authority’s e-service on behalf of a company or another person, Suomi.fi Messages will be activated for you, not for the person or company you are representing.

Who will receive electronic messages?

In 2026 electronic messages will be activated for:

  • people who use strong identification such as banking codes or mobile credentials in authorities' e-services (like Tax administration, Police or Kela), and
  • do not yet use Suomi.fi Messages.

If you already use Suomi.fi Messages, there is no need to do anything more!

Who will not receive electronic messages?

The change does not affect:

  • people who do not use public authorities’ online services with strong identification but interact with authorities through other channels
  • people without strong electronic identification tokens such as banking codes or mobile credentials
  • people without a Finnish personal identity code
  • people under guardianship or those who have a confirmed continuing power of attorney, and the information is registered in the Register of Guardianship Affairs
  • minors
  • companies.

How to activate Suomi.fi Messages during identification:

Suomi.fi Messages will be activated for you when you log in to an authority’s online service from the beginning of 2026.

  • When you use strong identification in an authority’s online service, Suomi.fi Messages will be activated for you automatically.

  • Enter your email address. You will receive a verification code to the address you provided.
  • Enter the verification code that you received in your email.
  • Done! From now on all your official mail will be sent by default to Suomi.fi Messages. Remember to check your new digital mailbox regularly.

If you have already activated Suomi.fi Messages earlier, this change does not affect you. You will continue to receive official mail in Suomi.fi Messages as before.

You can also stop using Suomi.fi Messages

If you want to stop using Suomi.fi Messages, do so in the Suomi.fi Messages settings. After that, you’ll receive letters by paper mail again.

If you stop using Suomi.fi Messages, you will not be directed to activate the service again for the next 365 days, even if you log in to an authority’s e-service. You can reactivate Suomi.fi Messages at any time if you wish.

When you use an authority’s digital service after the 365 day period has passed since ending the use, you will be directed to activate Suomi.fi Messages again.
